ABOUT JUDGE MARKLE
Judge Todd Markle was appointed to the Court of Appeals of Georgia by Governor Nathan Deal on December 17, 2018, and was elected state-wide in 2020. Prior to his appointment, Judge Markle served as a trial judge on the Superior Court of Fulton County.
Judge Markle began his legal career in Atlanta in 1989. He started his own law firm in 1996 handling general civil litigation. In practice, he tried numerous jury trials and has multiple reported appellate decisions from the state and federal courts. He held an AV rating from Martindale-Hubbell as well.
In January 2011, Judge Markle left private practice to become executive counsel to newly elected Governor Deal. In this role, he served as the governor’s chief legal advisor during the 2011 legislative session. He also chaired the inaugural Criminal Justice Reform Council which made recommendations for addressing recidivism and which became the basis for some of Governor Deal’s signature achievements.
Governor Deal appointed Judge Markle to the Superior Court of Fulton County in August 2011. He won a contested race to retain his seat in 2012 and ran unopposed in 2016. In addition to his regular judicial duties, he was instrumental in establishing what became the State’s largest Veterans Treatment Court. He and his team received national recognition for their work on behalf of veterans. That same year, Chief Justice Hugh Thompson appointed Judge Markle to the Georgia Returning Veterans Task Force to make recommendations to the State for addressing legal issues faced by service members. In 2016, Judge Markle was named the Outstanding Veterans Judge of the Year by the Military and Veterans Law Section of the State Bar and the Emory Law School Veterans Pro Bono Clinic.
By appointment of the governor, Judge Markle served on the Georgia Child Support Commission from 2016 until 2018. He has been a member of the boards of directors of the Rotary Club of Buckhead, the Atlanta Film Society and CHRIS Kids. He also served as an elder at Central Presbyterian Church. He graduated from the National Judicial College in Reno, Nevada in 2012 and was a member of the Leadership Atlanta Class of 2013. Judge Markle is also a member of the Lawyer’s Club of Atlanta and currently serves on the board of Georgia Appleseed.
